Elsie McPhee and her younger brother, Tommy, live furtively with their mother, who teachers them at home and constantly warns that they are not to talk to strangers, or even neighbors. It is an isolated and lonely life for Elsie, and when she finally dares to ignore her mother’s rules and make a friend, the family is suddenly on the the move again, to another dreary furnished apartment in a different state.
